how i lost weight: three month update

Well Friends, I disappeared from the blogosphere... again. Life happened and sleep prevailed. I’ve been wanting to share a three month update for several days now. I’m currently having my highlights touched up and figure this is as good a time as any.

This past Monday marked three months since I embarked on my weight loss journey. I am stoked to share that I have lost almost 22 lbs. I have dropped two sizes in pants and one to two sizes in shirts depending on the make and style. I have successfully completed two 5Ks and am working weekly to reduce my time - I’m slow as molasses.

I am so thankful to God for how far I’ve come. I know that I could not have done any of this without Him. He has given me the strength and willpower to make healthy choices and stay committed even when I didn’t realize I was leaning on Him. I love that I feel better physically and emotionally.

The question I receive most often is what are you doing to lose the weight. So, I wanted to share with you the things I’ve been focusing on for the last 90 days.

I traded Cokes for water and Diet Mt. Dew. I no longer drink regular pop. I focus more on water and use Mio Energy for my caffeine. I try to limit the diet drinks, but some days I just need that kick. Water is king, though.

I started packing my breakfast and lunch every day. I usually have a Kind granola bar or oatmeal for breakfast. For lunch, I have either a ham or turkey sandwich and a small bag of chips. I may or may not need an afternoon snack. Kind Minis are perfect for that. If I do need to eat out, I choose healthy - like Subway, grilled chicken from Chik-fil-A, or a half salad from Panera.

I live with four boys. A scaled down healthy dinner is not really an option. So, I continue to cook the things we know and love - cheeseburgers, spaghetti, tacos, steak, biscuits and gravy, etc. and I eat along with them. However, I exercise serious portion control at dinner. One cheeseburger, nothing else - I skip the chips or fries. A small serving of spaghetti, but no bread for me. I enjoy half of a biscuit with gravy instead of a whole one. If I’m still hungry, I chase it with vegetables or fruit.

I use the ProTracker Plus App to log all of my food intake. It’s a lot like the older Weight Watchers version and assigns points to all that you consume. You can earn additional points by being active.

I took up jogging. I used the 5K Runner app to go from the couch to a 5K. The app is set for eight weeks. It took me about ten. Sometimes I couldn’t get all three days in during the week or I felt like I needed to repeat a day here and there. I ran my first 5K about a month ago and my second last weekend. I now try to run three miles at least three times a week. My current focus is on getting less slow!

I haven’t been perfect. I’ve splurged on date nights, desserts and days when I’ve just been hangry. It happens. To everyone. What I focus on is controlling the indulgence and managing it. Having dinner out tonight? Let’s make sure we run today. Fall off the wagon and enjoy that unplanned yummy chocolate pretzel at the office? Stick to the serving size and don’t throw in the towel for the remainder of the day - eat chicken for dinner instead of steak.

Balance and smart choices help keep me sane. Running keeps me focused. Without being active, I know I would not be able to maintain the motivation. Rachel Hollis talked about how we should not be the first person we break our promises to in Girl, Wash Your Face. That has stuck with me. I WILL run at least three times a week. And I get stressed if it gets down to the end of the week and I haven’t done that. My Farmer can attest to that. I’ll run on both Saturday and Sunday if I have to.

Well Friends, that’s my approach. I realize it’s just a start and I need to continue to grow in making healthier decisions and embark on the adventure of strength straining, but I know it will all come with time. I realize this lifestyle change isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. I will fall, but I will get back up.

Thank you to all of you for your continued support and encouraging words. Here’s to continuing on the journey to #operationnomorefattyboop!
