10 best baby shower gifts

I must be thinking all things baby these days because today I thought I'd share 10 of the best baby shower gifts.

Before having children, baby shower shopping gave me anxiety. I had no idea what to get for the expectant mother and I often found registries overwhelming. Three kids later (one still in the womb) and I absolutely love shopping for mamas to be. I know exactly what I'm going to purchase. My gifts might not be the ones that get ooed and ahed over during the shower, but I walk away knowing the new mama will without a doubt use my new gift.

So, if you're like I was a few years ago and need some ideas, take a gander at my 10 favorite baby shower gifts. Which are your favorites?

[1] Diapers. You cannot err here in any way. Infants can fly through a large box in a week's time and they are not cheap. I would suggest going with Sizes 1 or 2 as babies grow quickly and won't stay in the newborn size for very long.

[2] Wipes. They will eventually be used for everything, not just keeping baby's bottom clean. My kids are almost 7 and almost 3, and we have wipes in a couple of different rooms plus the car. They are good for wiping snotty noses, cleaning hands, washing faces, and more. You'd be surprised how handy a wipe can be.

[3] Burt's Bees Bibs. There are so many adorable bibs out there, but these are by far my favorite. There are no buttons or velcro or snaps. They are super soft, easy to take on and off, and get the job done well. I like to have a dozen within arm's reach.

[4] HALO SleepSack. This swaddle let me sleep at night - with both kids. There are cotton and fleece ones. My oldest was a winter baby and we used the fleece one with him. I didn't worry about him getting cold and the sleepsack served as an alternative to a blanket which you're not supposed to use. My youngest was a fall baby and the cotton ones worked great for him, but not only because I was worried about him being warm enough. He was also a restless sleeper. The swaddle helped him sleep because it restrained him just enough to keep him from waking himself up every little bit by all his involuntary movements!

[5] Receiving Blankets. Not to be used as blankets, but as burp cloths. Both of my kids, one more so than the other, spit up like crazy. The burp cloths you can purchase that are supposed to be burp cloths just don't cut it. I have found that these "blankets" make ideal burp clothes because they're bigger, stronger, and thicker for catching and cleaning up baby's spit up.

[6] Gowns. These make nighttime diaper changes a little easier and require you to be less awake. There are no zippers or buttons to worry about. Not to mention if the diaper change in question results in a complete outfit change, gowns are easier on both mama and baby to trade out.

[7] Zip Sleepers. I could be on an island of my own on this one, but my kids stayed in sleepers day in and day out. I only dressed them in cute clothes for special outings like church. I opted for comfort for them and convenience for me. Button sleepers are okay and seem to be cuter, but you can't beat just zipping them right up as opposed to snapping a dozen buttons.

[8] Video Monitor. When I was pregnant with my first, a baby monitor was highly recommended to me, but not just any monitor, one with video capabilities. The video affords so much more peace of mind, freedom, and fosters parenting wisdom. It's great to be able to SEE your baby without having to go into the room to be able to visibly check on them. I can do chores outside while baby sleeps and be able to see how he or she is doing. I can also monitor whether or not I need to rush to baby when he or she cries - sometimes it's nice to finish that shower you've been needing for days.

[9] Aquaphor. Quite possibly the most universal and effective ointment I've used. Baby getting a diaper rash? Use Aquaphor. Baby have dry skin? Use Aquaphor. Baby have chapped skin on his or her face? Use Aquaphor. Baby scratch him or herself? Use Aquaphor. There are so many different ways this can be used and in my opinion does an amazing job on whatever it's needed for.

[10] On Becoming Baby Wise. Quite possibly the best book ever when it comes to establishing a routine for you and baby. Now, it can be a bit controversial since the book does ask you to let your baby "cry it out" in certain situations, but the book is more than that. For our family, we didn't necessarily follow this book to a T. We simply took the principles detailed in the book and adopted them to suit what we were comfortable with. I followed it more with my first and he's been an excellent sleeper from the start. I was more lenient with my second, and he was well over two before I could call him an awesome sleeper.

I would love to hear what some of your favorites are. What do you always get for expecting new mamas? What couldn't you live without when your newborn came along?

  1. My favorites were gift cards. I know that sounds meh but next to diapers and wipes I found them to be the best thing ever. Especially when I had to switch to formula. How long do we have now until we may get to see that sweet baby? 4 weeks? xo

  3. Almost all of these I agree totally with!! Bowen was so warm natured he basically just slept in a onesie and he was comfortable. I hated that I didn't get to use those cute sleepers :( One thing I get every mama is those munchkin arm & hammer poop diaper bags and the holder for them that clips on a diaper bag. Everybody needs a bag on the go for a poopy diaper. I didn't register for it but someone got it for me and it was the best thing ever!

  4. You can never go wrong with diapers and Aquaphor! I always try to get practical gifts now especially after seeing what gets used and what just sits in the closet. Such a fun post! Beautifully Candid

  5. Great ideas! I like Gerber cloth diapers to use as burp rags- we sometimes would get them monogrammed with a pretty ribbon for gifts. I also buy a delicates bag for all new moms- it is easy to store dirty socks in to wash so the socks don't get lost in the machine.

I love sleepers....and I love sweet babies in their sleepers! Just too cute:) Let me just tell you who old I am - I don't even know what a sleep sack is?!?! So tried and true practical gifts are a winner for me!!

  12. All great gifts! Diapers and wipes are my go-to's because no one likes to buy those for themselves. Someone suggested magnetic onesies to me and now I want to buy them all and give them to everyone!
